Research and Project Management

The Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism (CESJ) in Milan is expanding its network of freelance collaborators to support our growing portfolio of international research and educational projects.

Who We Are

CESJ (https://www.cesj.eu) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a healthier democracy through better science and better journalism. Led by Fabio Turone (Executive Director) and Daniela Ovadia (Scientific Director), the Center operates at the intersection of independent science journalism, science communication, research ethics, research integrity and science policy. We work with major European universities and research centres to analyze the social impact of research and promote the highest ethical standards in the Academia and in science communication, on projects funded among others by UNESCO, the European Research Council and the European Commission. 

Fields of Activity

Collaborators will contribute to projects involving:

  • Science journalism & Science communication: Research on media trends, impact assessment, and professional training.
  • ELSI & RRI: Ethical, Legal, and Social Impact assessment of emerging technologies and Responsible Research and Innovation.
  • Anticipatory Technology Ethics (ATE): Studying the future implications of frontier research (e.g., neuroscience, AI, biotechnology).
  • Scientific Citizenship: Developing formats for fostering public engagement and evidence-based debate.

Profiles Sought

We are looking for versatile professionals who can navigate both the academic world and the media landscape.

Essential Requirements:

Education: Master’s degree in a relevant field (Science journalism, Science communication, Ethics, Philosophy of science, STEM, or Social sciences).

Project Support: Ability to support event organization and day-to-day project monitoring.

Languages: Native or professional-level proficiency in English (essential for drafting EU deliverables and communicating with international partners). 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in qualitative/quantitative data collection, literature reviews, and drafting high-level technical reports.
  • PhD (or equivalent research experience) in Ethics, Science and technology Studies (STS), or related disciplines.
  • EU Project Expertise: Proven track record in managing Work Packages (WPs) or tasks within Horizon Europe or ERC frameworks.
  • Experience in proposal writing.
  • Familiarity with the administrative management and reporting of EU-funded projects.
  • Native or professional-level proficiency in Italian.

Terms of Collaboration

Format: Project-based consultancy (freelance/VAT-registered or equivalent).

Flexibility: Remote work is standard, but the candidate must be reachable during work hours of Central European Time (CET) and available for periodic in-person meetings at our Milan headquarters and occasional travel for European project meetings.

Compensation: Competitive person-month rates, negotiated individually based on seniority and specific project roles.
